Welcome to NASCAR by
Design.
This blog began in May
2013 as an attempt to curve the boredom of summer. It turned out to be something
much more than that. It became a stepping stone to where I am today - opening an
opportunity I could have never imagined.
At its inception, I was
concerned that I would have a considerable amount of free time with nothing to
do. That is when my mom suggested beginning a blog about NASCAR, since I am
very passionate about the sport. Thus “NASCAR by Design” was born.
I have been watching
NASCAR since about five when I noticed my dad had it on TV one afternoon. I immediately
loved it – the engines, the cars, the racing – all of it.
Some of my peers are
into football – some are into horses or gymnastics. NASCAR clicked with me - as
if by design, I gravitated toward Motorsports.
As I grew older I began
to learn more about the interworkings of the sport: All of the drivers, the
different parts of a race team, strategies, the car, etc. With that knowledge,
came opinions about the latest topics in the sport. I found it very natural to
write about the sport, which is why I found my blog to be very gratifying.
I wrote 16 articles in
the first 12 weeks and enjoyed crafting every one of them. It was my first
taste of writing about NASCAR publicly and it was wonderful. I began to realize
that I possibly wanted to make writing more than just a hobby. I already
planned to pursue a career within Motorsports. Writing for my blog inspired the
desire to become a NASCAR journalist.
I never expected what
would come next. In July, I was contacted by PopularSpeed.com founder and
former NASCAR spotter Mike Calinoff who asked if I was interested in writing
for his website. My response: Definitely! By the end of the day I was part of
the team.
At the time, Popular
Speed was a newly launched website. It has grown rapidly in a short period of
time and continues to expand. I began as a Development Journalist, but have
since been promoted to a Contributing Writer. The website has been a blessing
for me as it has given me an amazing opportunity to learn, grow and gain experience
as a journalist.
Life is so interesting.
Not long ago I was just a girl trying to curve the boredom of summer by writing
a blog. Now, that one little outlet has grown into something bigger than I
could have ever thought of in May of 2013. Indeed, life is interesting.
My journey as an
aspiring NASCAR journalist is just starting, but I can’t wait to see what is in
store for me in the future.
